IMPROVED WATER AND SANITATION SYSTEM CAN REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY RATE OF SLUM DWELLERS IN DHAKACITY.

Background
Dhaka is characterized one of the most densely populated cities in the world. It has a population of about 15m and is one of the fastest growing cities in the world with an estimated 30000 to 400000 migrants, mostly poor, arriving to the city each year, estimates suggest that about 28% of the migrant population is poor and 12% are extremely poor. Out of 15m population around 3.5m live in over 3000 slums in Dhaka city. Physical conditions of these slums are very much hazardous to live in because of pollution and unhygienic living condition. The minimum basic service facilities are absent to it’s dwellers. Slum people are engaged with different profession like rickshow/van puller/constructionlabour/other day labour/street vendor/housemaid/aya/garments worker/construction labour etc. and earning level is around 4000-6000 Taka per month. Slum population is the potential source of very low paid manpower those working in our aristocratic areas of Dhakacity. These population cann’t afford to hire a house with modern amenities just like electricity/water supply/gas. Consequently they are forced to live in a slum without basic minimum service facilities. These slum houses are located near the rail lines, private land owner and any vacate government land.A recent report of “Dustha Sastha kendra(DSK)” mentioned that roughly 30% families in slum suffer acute water shortage for their daily requirements. Currenly , the child mortality rate in Dhaka slum is 4.75%(Centre for epidemiology, national hospital, University of Oslo, Norway) which is alarmingly very high. Therefore a through research is urgent to find a way to reduce the child mortality rate effectively in the slum. Low child mortality rate will create confidence among the slum couples and encourage them to have less number of children. As a result population booming in the slum area might be stopped.

Who does the problem affect?

Slum children are affected by unhygienic living condition like inadequate, dubious quality water supply and absence of sanitary latrines. Waterborne diseses like diarrhoea, cholera, juindice, typhoid spread and attack children due to drinking contaminated water and open defication. These type of diseases are obiously a serious threat to the children's life and ultimately causes the death resulting increased child mortality rate.

What are the boundaries of the problem? Which areas does the problem affect?
Healthy children means healthy nation, they are the future leader and responsible citizen of any nation. we should take optimum care to make children healthy, well educated and sound minded. Loss of life is irrecoverable. If any child expired due this type of preventable disease, it brings inormous loss to the bereaved family. So children living in the slum are most vulnerable to be victimized by these type of dieseas.

What is the problem?
Lack of potable adequate drinking water and absence of sanitary latrines spread waterborne diseases among the children resulting increased child mortality rate. Slum children are most vulnerable to be victimized as their parents cann't afford to manage WATSAN facilities for them.

What is the impact of the problem?
Impact of the problem is the high rate of child mortality. Population booming in the slum is also related with the high child mortality rate. because high child mortality rate forced the slum people to have more children to ensure that required number will survive.

What will happen when it is fixed?

Child mortality rate will be reduced once the problem is fixed. Nothing should be more than the saving of life.Slum population booming will reduce after fixing the problem.

What would happen if we didn’t solve the problem?

Absence of adequate WATSAN system and living in unhygienic condition of slum endangers the life of slum people, specially children are most vulnerable to be affected by waterborne dieases which causes death to the affected children.
When - When does the problem occur? - When and how does it need to be fixed?
The problem occuring round the year, however intensity may be high during the lean period and rainy season when water sources get polluted. The problem needs to be fixed as soon as possible. It can be fixed by ensuring potable drinking water supply and sanitary latrines for defication.

Where - Where is the problem occurring? Only in certain locations, processes, products, etc.

The problem is occuring more or less all over the country but it's intensity is high in the slum areas.

Why - Why is it important that we fix the problem?

To save the lives of numerous children who are the future generation of our country. That's why it is extremely important to fix the problem immediately.
Research goal
Saving the most valuable lives of our beloved children.
The research questions
Is child mortality rate related with potable water supply and sanitary latrines?
Can reduced child mortality rate discourage slum people to have more children?
